Strategic Policy Committees (SPCs) were introduced in 2004. Their main function is to advise the County Council on policy matters. They discuss policy issues and make proposal that go before the full meeting of the Council for approval. There are 6 SPCs in Mayo that deal with the following:
Housing Services
Cultural, Education, Heritage & Corporate Affairs
Roads & Transportation
Water Supply & Sewerage
Planning & Economic Development
Environmental Policy and Emergency Services
The SPC are made up of 1 Town Councillor, 7 County Councillors and 4 Sectoral Representatives nominated from the Business Sector, Agriculture, Trade Unions, Environmental and Community.
It is hugely beneficial to the Community & Voluntary sector to be represented on the SPCs because it is the main vehicles through which groups can influence the work and activity of the Council through the development of policy.
