Mayo County Community Forum assists communities in Mayo to prepare strategically for their future through the “Community Futures” Programme of community action planning. The programme assists communities to prepare a Community Action Plan
Mayo Community Futures
Mayo Community Futures is a partnership of Community and Agencies and was established by the Community Forum in 2005 to:
• Assist communities prepare Community Action Plans
• Encourage more people to become active in their communities
• Strengthen and develop local community organisations
• Enable communities to identify and progress priority projects and actions
• Enable communities to effectively represent their interests at local, county, and national levels
Mayo Community Futures is made up of representatives of Mayo County Community Forum, Mayo County Development Board, South West Mayo Development Co Ltd., Mayo North East LEADER Partnership Co Teo, VEC and Tochar Valley Rural Network. The programme is coordinated by Mary Wrafter, Support Worker, County Community Forum.
The programme has been funded by Mayo County Council, County Community Forum, LEADER and the VEC.
The first plans 2007-2010 were launched in January 2007.
The four communities of Ballycroy, Ballyhaunis, Carrowmore-Lacken and Islandeady participated in this first phase pilot programme.
Balla, Carracastle/Rooskey, Louisburgh/Killeen and Partry took part in phase 2 of the pilot programme and their plans 2008-2011 were successfully completed in 2008.
2009 saw the participation of Foxford, Killawalla, Mulranny and Tourlough in the programme with community plans 2010-2015 launched in 2010. It was decided that a five year timeframe was more realistic and sustainable in the present challenging economic climate.
Community Futures planning is taking place in Ardagh, Kilkelly, Newport and Tourmakeady starting in Sept 2010.
