Mayo ‘Fit4Life’
5km Summer Series

Mayo AC and Swinford AC have joined forces to host the first ever ‘Fit4life’ 5km Summer Series over 3 Wednesdays in June and July. Supported by Mayo Sports Partnership the summer series timetable is as follows:
Wednesday June 30th in Castlebar
Wednesday July 7th in Swinford
Wednesday July 14th in Claremorris
At 8pm Sharp each evening.
The Event is being sponsored by Country Harvest Fruit and Veg Store, Claremorris. `

Week 1 : Wednesday June 30th in Castlebar
The Event kicks off in Castlebar on Wednesday June 30th starting very close to St Gerald’s College on the Newport road.
Week 2: Wednesday July 7th in Swinford
This event starting in Swinford on Wednesday July 7th.
Week 3: Wednesday July 14th in Claremorris
This event starts and finishes at the race track in Claremorris on the Balla road.
Barbeque following this event on Wednesday evening.
Everyone is welcome to take part. The cost of participation is €8 or just €20 if you take part in all 3 * 5km events and this will include a barbeque on the final night in Claremorris.
Participants can take part in 1, 2 or 3 of the events, it’s up to them!
Each participant will get one race number and keep this race number for each of the 3 walks/runs. The emphasis is on fun and participation and Mayo AC, Swinford AC along with Mayo Sports Partnership would like to invite everyone to participate. The event is open to people of all abilities.
The 3 * 5km courses are accurately measured by the AAI.

Athletics Fun Days are being held on Wednesday June 9th and Thursday June 10th from 10.30am-1.30pm at the Claremorris Athletic Club Facilities.
The 2 days are for children from primary schools in the South and East Mayo areas. These schools have already taken part this Spring in phase 3 of the 'Introduction to Athletics Programme' being rolled out by Claremorris Athletic Club in conjunction with Mayo Sports Partnership.
The programme is aimed at including all primary school children including those with a disability, those from the traveller communities and children from ethnic minority group.
The fun packed Day of Sport and physical activity for primary school children.
The day will include a variety of athletic disciplines including 'High Jump, Long Jump, Ball Throw, Shot Putt, Hurdles, Sprinting and Relays'. Primary School Athletics Fun Day
Athletics Fun Day June 9th and June 10th
An Athletics Fun Day was held for Primary School children from South and East Mayo on June 9th and 10th in Claremorris at the Athletic Club facilities/racetrack. The Athletics Fun Day is in its second year and is hosted by Anne Ronayne
This is the second year for this type of event to be run.
Tesco Claremorris kindly sponsored fruit and water for the 2 Day event, special thanks to Martin Daly manager and Marie Crowe Community Champion for their generosity.
The 2 day event worked extremely well with 8 local national schools taking part over the 2 days. In total 330 children from all 8 schools.
Day 1 = Knock, Kilkelly, Balla, Roundfort and Kilmaine

The day started at 10.30am with all schools grouped together and broken up into classes.
Each class then started at station 1 and every 20 minutes rotated to a different station.
The Stations consisted of a trained leader that took them through an athletics discipline.
Station 1: Outdoor Long Jump
Station 2: Sprints
Station 3: Ball Throw, Javelin and Shot putt (3 sections)
Station 4: Hurdles
Station 5: Indoor High Jump
Final Event: Relays
Each child got the opportunity to take part in all of these events and as a finale relays were held. The ethos of the day is that children can take part in all activities with no competitive element to the day. Participation is paramount and each child given a chance to try out different activities.
Teachers who accompanied the children also acted as volunteers on the day as well as helping out at various stations.

The 2 days were evaluated by teachers from 7 of the 8 schools and the reviews were all without exception ‘Excellent’.
Interested in being part of this new group for women? A new group is being formed in the Ballyheane/Ballintubber area for women who may be interested in sport and recreation.
Here's a chance to get fitter in a fun and relaxed environment while meeting other women from your area.
A meeting is being held at the Ballintubber GAA facility on Wednesday evening June 9th at 7.30pm, anyone interested in joining this group or contributing in any way is more than welcome to come along.

Meet and Train is now up and running in Ballinrobe.
For anyone interested in Walking, Jogging or Running this is an opportunity to meet others and do some exercise with them.
Meet and Train is simply going along for 1 hour to the Ballinrobe Race Course where you can do some exercise with the help of some leaders.
The time for meet and train is 7.30pm on Wednesday Evenings, The cost annually is just €20 introductory price with no extra charges. This €20 is predominantly for insurance through Athletics Ireland.

Ladies Gaelic & Gaelic4Mothers is starting in Claremorris on Monday the 17th of May in the pitch at Mount St Michael’s Secondary School from 7.30 to 8.30pm.
€20.00 per participant which is an annual fee.

The Spring Fit4Work programme is underway. The programme is designed to encourage employees from Mayo County Council, GMIT, HSE, VEC and Western Care to participate in exercise classes at lunchtimes and directly after work.
Classes such as Kundulini Yoga, Core and Tone, Pilates, Circuits, Fitness Kickboxinig, Tensho Kata, Aerobics and Boxercise are all part of the extensive programme offered. Since the programme started in September 2009 over 500 participants have taken part.

‘Introduction to Athletics’ spring 2010 for
This initiative run by Claremorris Athletic Club at the Claremorris Running Track and Facilities, in conjunction with Mayo Sports Partnership is back for Phase 3. This has been a most popular programme in 2009 with over 600 students involved from Schools in South and East Mayo.
Phase 3- March 1st – June 2nd ( 12 week programme)
Children are introduced to athletic disciplines such as running, relays, long jump, and high jump, shot putt, hurdles, javelin and many other aspects of athletics. National Schools in the South and East will be invited to participate in the spring 2010 programme.

Mayo Fit4life 5k Summer Series Ends in Style!

On Wednesday July 14th all roads led to Claremorris when 160 walkers and runners took part in the final leg of the 5k Fit4life Series.
First male home was TJ Mc Hugh, followed by Daniel Murray and Paddy O’Toole all of Mayo AC. The first female home this week was again Collete Touhy Mayo AC with club mate Cathy Connolly in second position and the young Rosie Hynes of Swinford AC coming in a very strong 3rd.

After the walk/run participants and friends retired to the Western Hotel for an ‘indoor Barbeque’ where the prizegiving took place. There was a packed house with hundreds of people all involved in Fit4life throughout the county there. The Westport Women’s Fit4life team were awarded the first place position with Claremorris in second place and Ballinrobe and Castlebar very closely following on. Gerry Kilroy Westport accepted Westports award with Tracey Durkan accepting Claremorris’s ladies prizes.

A great night was had by all in Killasser last Wednesday evening for the 2nd leg of the Fit4life 5k Summer Series.
Over 100 walkers/joggers/runners took to the roads of Killasser, Swinford to take part in the 2nd event of the series. Mostly Fit4life walkers and runners with lots of locals participating on this fine but blustery evening.
First Male home was TJ McHugh Mayo AC followed by Clubmate Daniel Murray and Andrew Lynskey Fit4life in 3rd place position. First Female home was Catherine Conway, second Castlebar woman Colette Touhy and third place Edel Hackett Fit4Life Westport.

There is a women’s Fit4life team prize at the end of the series and Westport Fit4life ladies have put down a very strong challenge to the other fit4life groups in the first leg of the series. Claremorris, Castlebar and Ballinrobe are also in strong contention.
In the men’s individual fit4life prizes Andrew Lynskey and Michael Mc Neela have set out their stalls with Robbie Reynolds, Adrian Joyce and Tony Gleeson coming in very strongly too.
