Athletics Fun Day 2010

Primary School Athletics Fun Day

Athletics Fun Days June 2010

Two very successful Athletics Fun Day were held for Primary School children from South and East Mayo on June 9th and 10th in Claremorris at the Athletic Club facilities/racetrack. The Athletics Fun Day is in its second year and is hosted by Anne Ronayne Mayo Sports Partnership and Jim Ryan, National and local coach with Claremorris AC. This programme was organised on the back of a very successful phase 2 and phase 3 ‘Introduction to Athletics for national school children in South and East Mayo. The ‘introduction to athletics programme is a 12-14 week programme where local schools are invited to attend on 1 or 2 days where the children under the tutelage of coach Jim Ryan Claremorris AC can experience athletics and try them out. That programme which is ongoing is aimed at including all primary school children in athletics. That includes those children with a disability, those from the traveller community, from families who are affected by unemployment and from ethnic minority groups.

This is the second year for this type of event to be run.

Tesco Claremorris kindly sponsored fruit and water for the 2 Day event, special thanks to Martin Daly manager and Marie Crowe Community Champion for their generosity.

The 2 day event worked extremely well with 8 local national schools taking part over the 2 days. In total 330 children from all 8 schools.

Day 1   =          Knock, Kilkelly, Balla, Roundfort and Kilmaine

Day 2   =          Claremorris Convent Girls School , Meelickmore and Barnacarroll

********************************************************************

The day started at 10.30am with all schools grouped together and broken up into classes.

Each class then started at station 1 and every 20 minutes rotated to a different station.

The Stations consisted of a trained leader that took them through an athletics discipline.

Station 1: Outdoor Long Jump

Station 2: Sprints

Station 3: Ball Throw, Javelin and Shot putt (3 sections)

Station 4: Hurdles

Station 5: Indoor High Jump

Final Event: Relays

Each child got the opportunity to take part in all of these events and as a finale relays were held. The ethos of the day is that children can take part in all activities with no competitive element to the day. Participation is paramount and each child given a chance to try out different activities.

Teachers who accompanied the children also acted as volunteers on the day as well as helping out at various stations.

**********************************************************************

The 2 days were evaluated by teachers from 7 of the 8 schools and the reviews were all without exception ‘Excellent’.
